My vTech phone rings, but I can't talk on it

I have no dial tone, I am unable to dial out. I charged the battery, twice. Message I get is "not available at this time" when I go through choices.

Short summary:

  1. First, make sure you are using the VTech power supply provided with your telephone. Using a different power supply can cause issues.
  2. Check that the power supply is not connected to an electrical outlet that is controlled by a wall switch. If it is, switch the wall switch to the "on" position.
  3. Confirm that the electrical outlet that the telephone is plugged into is working. You can check this by plugging in another device and seeing if it powers on.
  4. Make sure that the cords are plugged into the channels on the bottom of the base. If the cords are not properly installed, the base will not sit level, and the phone may not charge properly.
  5. If all of the lights are lit on the phone, even the Answer On light, and the outlet is working, try resetting your phone system.
  6. To reset the phone system, complete the following steps:
Step 1: Disconnect the power to the telephone base.
Step 2: Disconnect the handset battery.
Step 3: Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the power to the telephone base.
Step 4: Reconnect the handset battery.
Step 5: Wait about one minute for the handset to re-establish a link with the telephone base, and then test the phone again.
  7. After completing the reset process, reattach the handset battery and wait for a minute to see if it works.

I don't know how to turn off the desktop phone.

You should only use the VTech power supply provided with your telephone. Make sure the power supply is not connected to an electrical outlet that is controlled by a wall switch. Confirm that the electrical outlet that the telephone is plugged into is working.
Please make sure that the cords are plugged into the channels on the bottom of the base. If the cords are not properly installed, the base will not sit level and the phone may not charge properly.
